One person was killed Monday morning following a serious vehicle collision involving the Highway 7 flyover ramp and Highway 8 below, according to Ontario Provincial Police.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt told CBC News that the crash occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. The driver was traveling on the Highway 7 flyover ramp when the vehicle lost control, drove over a snowbank, and became airborne before falling onto Highway 8.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Despite life-saving efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional injuries were reported.
According to Sgt. Schmidt, preliminary information suggests the vehicle “lost control on the ramp and launched over the snow embankment to the highway below.” The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police have not released the identity of the driver pending notification of next of kin.
Road Conditions and Investigation
The collision occurred during the morning commute, prompting lane closures and traffic disruptions along Highway 8 as emergency crews worked at the scene. Police redirected traffic while investigators examined the crash site and cleared debris from the roadway.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether road conditions, speed, or other factors contributed to the crash. Winter driving conditions and snow accumulation remain a concern on elevated ramps and overpasses, where ice and reduced traction can significantly increase the risk of losing control.
OPP collision reconstruction officers continue to investigate the incident. Drivers were urged to exercise caution in the area and to adjust their driving to winter road conditions, particularly on ramps and bridges where surfaces can be more hazardous.
Community Impact
The fatal crash serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers motorists face during winter driving conditions. The loss of life has underscored the importance of reducing speed, maintaining safe distances, and remaining alert, especially during early morning hours.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact Ontario Provincial Police.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
